My boys started school yesterday, new schools for both of them. My 12 yr old graduated to middle school and could hardly sleep Monday night in anticipation of his first day. My 15 yr old was much more calm leading up to his first day of high school, until we pulled up to the building. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Wow.”
They’re excited because they’re moving into uncharted territory. They have to learn how to navigate through their new buildings; they have to learn new rules; they get to make new friends. Both of them are slightly out of their comfort zones and the energy is contagious.
I gained some perspective from their “first day of school” experiences. Namely, change is good. We grow when we stretch ourselves. Keeping things the same is safe, but it doesn’t allow us to become the best possible version of ourselves.
So do something new and get excited about life.
