Once upon a time, the pilgrims gave thanks to the Indians for helping them survive when food was scarce. They celebrated with a big meal, something rarely enjoyed. Today we continue the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving with a big meal. The average person consumes 4500 calories during that gluttonous experience. But why? Food is anything but scarce. We over-eat on a regular basis, making many of us look like the stuffed bird.
Instead, we should consider celebrating the things in our lives that are scarce today, like one-on-one time with our kids, like physical exercise. Maybe we should figure out how much money we normally spend on the Thanksgiving meal and donate that amount to our favorite charity. Then we could grab the kids, head out to the closest state park, go for a hike, and talk.
I’ll think more about this idea as I shovel in the second piece of pie.
