There are 2 kinds of vacations. Vacations from work and vacations from life. Vacations from work usually include the family and a trip to some fun destination. It’s uninterrupted family time…no gaming systems, no television, hopefully no cell phones…just family time, bonding time. As parents we hope to create great memories for the kids and put so much energy into the process that by the time we get home, we often feel like we could use a vacation from our vacation.
Vacations from life are different and best done alone. Just you with yourself. Maybe it’s a conference or even better some kind of “get away from it all” destination. In September I went to Vancouver to sea kayak with the whales. It was just a 4 day trip but it gave me tons of perspective. And this week, I spent 4 days in Florida visiting old friends. No schedule. No theme parks. Just down time from my normal life…reading and writing time. It’s amazing how a couple of days can help you re-focus and sometimes even remind you who you are.
So next year, plan a short vacation from your life, and come back with energy to spare…for your life.
