You’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat,” right? Well, I think it should be, “You are who you hang out with.” As parents, we spend time worrying about the quality of the young people our children spend time with…understanding that the wrong influence could lead them off track. However, as adults we sometimes fail to recognize that we too are highly influenced by the company we keep. If you value health and fitness but surround yourself with people who eat too much, sleep too little, and party like rock stars, you will probably find yourself putting health and fitness on the back burner.
I am not, however, suggesting that you should get rid of your friends. No…that would be like throwing away those shoes that secretly hurt your feet. You love those shoes! No…you’re definitely keeping them. However, you might want to buy new shoes that are more comfortable and wear them more often. You can bring out those favorite shoes for special occasions.
And likewise, the people you spend the most time with should “fit” who you want to be in the world. Trust me, in the long run you’ll be happier.
