I was hiking at High Cliff State Park with my son a few days ago and as soon as we got off the main trail and started down the less traveled single-track trail, he started running. Most people avoid this narrow path because of the obstacles, i.e., rocks, stumps, and downed trees. They’d rather hike on the wider, safer, easier to navigate trail.
However, kids love the challenge of jumping over things, of constantly adjusting their gate to avoid falling or twisting an ankle. For kids, the obstacles are fun and exciting to maneuver through. From my son’s perspective, the bigger the obstacle, the better.
Watching him bound through the woods reminded me to embrace the challenges that life throws in my path. Those challenges are the obstacles that make life more exciting and getting past them makes us fierce.
